Papers, 1917-1938.

Chiefly the papers of Ellen Harvie Smith (1891-1961) of Richmond, Va., a reformer whose voluntary activities promoted children's and family health in Virginia during the 1920s and 1930s. Her correspondence, 1925- 1937, and other papers concern her work for the Virginia State Department of Health and Bureau of Child Welfare (now the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Family Health Services) in promoting physical fitness and preventative health care. Mary Evelyn Brydon (1878-1930), director of the Bureau of Child Welfare, John Garland Pollard (1871-1937) and George C. Peery (1873-1952), governors of Virginia, figured prominently among her supporters. The collection also includes three letters, 1929-1933, of Smith's father, Richard Hewlett Smith (1859-1945), president of the Planters National Bank, and four cookbooks, 1904-1936, owned by Smith and other members of her family.
